Family reunites with firefighters, EMS who saved choking child in Carroll County

A family whose child was saved after choking on candy visited the Manchester Volunteer Fire Department on Friday to reunite with the firefighters and EMS personnel who helped save the child’s life.

On February 21, 2026, the Manchester Volunteer Fire Department and Carroll County Department of Fire and EMS units were dispatched in response to reports of a young child actively choking on candy.

As crews were leaving the station, officials said they encountered a family member carrying a child who was unresponsive and not breathing.

A lieutenant from the Carroll County Department of Fire and EMS immediately initiated life-saving procedures.

After multiple attempts, the obstruction was successfully removed, allowing the child to breathe on her own.

The child was taken to Carroll Hospital Center for evaluation and treatment before being released.

“This incident highlights the power of quick recognition, immediate action, and the seamless partnership between volunteer and career personnel who work together every day to protect the citizens of Carroll County,” Carroll County Department of Fire and EMS of Maryland wrote in a Facebook post.
