Four CBP officers save choking toddler at BWI airport

MARYLAND (WBFF) — Four personnel from U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) at Baltimore Washington International (BWI) Thurgood Marshall Airport saved a choking child on Friday, allowing the toddler to celebrate his second birthday.

On June 26, the child, who had arrived with his U.S. citizen mother and father from Germany, started seizing while waiting in CBP’s primary inspection queue.

One of the CBP officers noticed the situation and radioed for medical assistance.

A supervisory CBP officer and a second officer promptly responded.

The emergency was also reported to the BWI airport emergency medical services.

Officials stated that the child was choking and turning blue, prompting the CBP officers to immediately initiate the Heimlich maneuver.

“Many of our Customs and Border Protection personnel are parents, so when they see a child in such distress it certainly has a profound effect on them that everybody wants to jump in to help. We are pleased that this child and his parents will get to soon celebrate his second birthday,” said CBP Area Port Director Adam Rottman in Baltimore.

After the second round of the maneuver, the child vomited, and the officers successfully cleared his airway.
