A groundhog in Havre de Grace tested “unsatisfactory” for the rabies virus on Tuesday and may have been exposed to people and other animals in the area, according to the Harford County Health Department.

While not a confirmation, all unsatisfactory test results are presumed to be positive for the rabies virus.

Health officials encourage residents to keep pets leashed during walks, stay up to date on pet vaccinations, keep trash cans covered, keep pet food inside, and avoid interacting with wildlife.

While seeing a groundhog is not cause for alarm, if you or your pets have had contact with a groundhog in this area, please contact the Harford County Health Department at 410-877-2300.
