I-695 ramp to northbound Harford Road closed this weekend for pipe work

Major detours are coming to part of the Baltimore Beltway this weekend as transportation officials close a key ramp for construction.

The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration will shut down the exit ramp from westbound I-695 (outer loop) to northbound MD 147 (Harford Road) in Parkville starting at 8 p.m. Friday through 8 a.m. Sunday. According to the agency, contractor crews need the closure to install a new underground drainage pipe.

During this period, drivers heading from the outer loop of I-695 to northbound MD 147 will follow a detour using MD 41 (Perring Parkway), traveling through the MD 41 interchange and using the inner loop of I-695 to reach northbound MD 147. The ramp from the outer loop of I-695 to southbound MD 147 will stay open.

Officials said there also will be a single right lane closure on the outer loop of I-695 from US 1 (Belair Road) to MD 41 from 8 p.m. Friday to 8 a.m. Sunday. In addition, a double right lane closure is planned in the same area between 8 p.m. Saturday and 8 a.m. Sunday.

Crews will use digital message boards, temporary traffic signs and barrels to guide motorists through the detour and work zone. If bad weather delays the project, the closure and detour will be rescheduled for the next possible weekend.

This pipe installation is part of a larger Transportation Systems Management and Operations project aimed at enabling part-time shoulder use from I-70 to MD 43 (White Marsh Boulevard) in Baltimore County. Concrete General Inc. of Gaithersburg is the lead contractor for the effort.

The State Highway Administration urges drivers to stay alert, avoid distractions and follow posted speed limits in the work zone. Motorists can dial #77 for roadside assistance if needed.
