Indiana deputy in critical condition after shooting inside emergency room, officials say

An Indiana sheriff’s deputy was shot and critically injured inside an emergency room in Michigan City on Friday morning, according to officials.

Indiana State Police said a LaPorte County sheriff’s deputy was assisting someone he believed to be a stranded motorist when the suspect asked to be taken to the hospital.

Deputy Jon Samuelson, 33, was shot three times inside the hospital, police said. He was initially taken to a nearby hospital before being transferred to Memorial Hospital in South Bend.

Samuelson is a 12-year veteran of the department and comes from a long line of police officers. His grandfather is also a retired LaPorte Chief.

The suspect, identified as 22-year-old Sharod Grafton Jr. of Chicago, was taken to the LaPorte County Jail and is expected to be transferred to the Porter County Jail.

Franciscan Health said there is no active threat to patients, staff or the community.

The LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office also said the shooting was an isolated incident and there is no ongoing threat to the public.
