Man crossing beltway with gas can struck, killed in Montgomery County

A person is dead after a crash involving a pedestrian in Montgomery County, Maryland, late Thursday night, as Maryland State Police work to identify a driver who fled the scene.

Officials said shortly after 10 p.m. that the crash took place before Exit 33 to Maryland Route 185 (Connecticut Avenue).

Troopers from the Maryland State Police (MSP) Rockville Barrack responded after receiving reports of a pedestrian struck in the roadway.

MSP’s preliminary findings reveal that a motorist was parked on the left shoulder of the highway and tried to cross multiple travel lanes on foot. Police believe the man was carrying a gas can when he was struck by oncoming traffic.

The pedestrian was hit by at least two vehicles. One of the drivers remained at the scene, howeverm MPS said the second vehicle involved did not stop and fled the area.

The pedestrian has not yet been identified. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

All lanes of the outer loop were closed for nearly six hours during the investigation.

The investigation remains ongoing, and officials are asking for the public’s help in locating the driver and vehicle that fled. The vehicle that left the scene is described as a silver or gray sedan with heavy front-end damage.
