Maryland AG’s office investigates fatal police-involved shooting in Bel Air

HARFORD COUNTY, MD. (WBFF) — The Independent Investigations Division of the Maryland Office of the Attorney General said it is investigating a fatal police-involved shooting that happened during a traffic stop Saturday night in Bel Air.

According to the preliminary investigation, at about 9 p.m., an officer with the Bel Air Police Department conducted a traffic stop in the 300 block of Franklin Street.

Officials said during the stop, the officer fired his service weapon, striking the man.

Officers provided emergency medical aid until emergency medical services arrived. The driver was taken to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

The officer also sustained injuries and was treated at the hospital.

Investigators are asking anyone with information about the incident, including cell phone video or private surveillance video, to contact the Independent Investigations Division at 410-576-7070 or IID@oag.maryland.gov.

The division said it will generally release the decedent’s name and any involved officers’ names within two business days of the incident, though that period may be extended under protocol.

Officials said officers were equipped with body-worn cameras, and the division will generally release body-worn camera footage within 20 business days, with possible delays for witness interviews, technical issues related to shielding civilian identities, or allowing family members to view the video before it is released publicly.
