Maryland Senator-Elect Angela Alsobrooks Faces Unpaid Property Tax Bill

A review by 7News has uncovered new details about unpaid property taxes owed by Maryland’s newly-elected U.S. Senator, Angela Alsobrooks.

According to the report, Alsobrooks has not received an extension to pay off the outstanding balance on her property taxes in Washington, D.C. and is not currently on a payment plan. She originally owed more than $47,000, but was granted a deal from the District that removed a 10% penalty and 25% of the interest that had accumulated over the past decade.

The sizeable tax bill grew so large because Alsobrooks failed to pay her full share of property taxes over a 13-year period, from 2003 when she was deeded the home by her mother. Alsobrooks has stated that she was unaware of two tax discounts she had been receiving on the property, which she was not actually eligible for.

On October 10th, Alsobrooks paid more than $17,000 towards the outstanding balance, which had a deadline of October 31st to be paid in full. This left her with a remaining balance of over $29,000.

Her new deadline to pay off the full amount is November 30th. The D.C. Tax Office has confirmed that Alsobrooks can continue making payments on the bill indefinitely, but additional interest will continue accruing each day the full balance is not settled.

As of the latest reporting, the unpaid tax bill has now grown to over $30,000.

7News attempted to reach out to Alsobrooks’ campaign to inquire about when the next payment on the outstanding taxes would be made, but has not received a response.

This revelation about Alsobrooks’ unpaid property taxes comes after an earlier ethics complaint was filed against her during her Senate campaign. The latest development is likely to raise further questions about the senator-elect’s personal financial responsibilities and transparency.

As Alsobrooks prepares to take office, managing this lingering tax issue will be an early challenge she will need to address. Her constituents will be watching closely to see how she resolves this matter in the weeks ahead.
