Drivers on the Baltimore Beltway in Pikesville should plan for significant lane closures starting Sunday night as crews replace guardrail and resurface pavement on westbound I-695.

The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration will upgrade sections of guardrail and resurface pavement on the right side of westbound (outer loop) I-695 between the MD 140 (Reisterstown Road) and I-795 (Northwest Expressway) interchanges beginning at 7 p.m. Sunday, June 28.

The work will require a continuous closure of the right lane and right auxiliary lane through 9 a.m. Tuesday, June 30, weather permitting. The agency said crews will begin the lane closures at 7 p.m. Sunday, and they will be in effect for 34 hours, with lanes expected to reopen by 9 a.m. Tuesday.

Drivers are urged to build in extra commuting time and consider alternate routes.

The guardrail replacement and paving work is part of the $184 million Transportation Systems Management and Operations project on I-695 between I-70 and MD 43 (White Marsh Boulevard), aimed at easing peak-hour congestion and enhancing safety and travel time reliability along I-695.

The State Highway Administrator’s contractor, Concrete General Inc. of Gaithersburg, will use temporary traffic signs and cones to guide motorists through the work zone.

The State Highway Administration urged motorists to remain alert, avoid distractions and obey posted speed limits while traveling through the area. Motorists can dial #77 on their mobile devices for roadside assistance.
