Eli Heidenreich was allowed to invite 10 people to join him in the green room for the NFL draft on Saturday at Acrisure Stadium in Pittsburgh.

Naturally, the standout senior slotback for Navy football chose to surround himself with immediate family — parents David and Tara, younger siblings Ezra and Ava and four cousins. They were the first to hug and congratulate Heidenreich after he was picked by the hometown Pittsburgh Steelers in the seventh round, No. 230 overall.

Only two nonrelatives joined Heidenreich in the exclusive, private lounge where top prospects hang out while waiting to get drafted. They were Nate Sala and JP Walters, lifelong friends who have supported Heidenreich every step along the way.

“It means a ton to me and Nate that Eli wanted to share this experience with us. We’ve been like brothers since we were 5 years old and have so many memories together,” Walters said.
