COLLEGE PARK, Md. (7News) — University of Maryland police are investigating a series of residential burglaries involving three apartments at South Campus Commons #3, including one in which a student encountered a man inside her residence.
The incidents occurred on the building’s third floor between approximately 1:30 and 9 a.m. Sunday, according to a university safety notice.
Officers responded to the first reported burglary around 4:17 a.m. A student told police she was in another part of her apartment when she heard a noise coming from the common area around 4:15 a.m.

The student opened a door and saw a man in the apartment’s common area. He immediately left, police said.
The student described the man as being in his early 20s and between 5 feet, 8 inches and 6 feet tall. He was wearing a gray shirt and dark pants.
Police responded to another reported burglary around 9:52 a.m. after students found kitchen-related items on the floor of a common area.
During a canvass of nearby apartments, officers identified a third residence with signs of possible unauthorized entry. Students there reported finding items in the kitchen and living room around 7:30 a.m. that had not previously been left out.
Officers checked the remainder of the third floor and did not identify additional apartments with similar concerns, according to the notice.
Detectives obtained screenshots showing persons of interest during the investigation. The images were included with the university’s updated safety notice.
Police did not say whether property was stolen or whether the apartment doors had been locked.

The University of Maryland Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Unit is investigating the incidents under case numbers 2026-234069 and 2026-234177.
Anyone with information about the burglaries or the identities of the persons of interest is asked to call UMD police at 301-405-3555. Anonymous tips may be submitted through the department’s website.
Police reminded students to secure their doors and windows, avoid allowing unknown people into residential buildings, and immediately report suspicious activity.
