SUN: Artscape 2026 highlights, headliners and rainy-day activities

Create Baltimore Chief of Staff Jonathan Gilmore grew up as a musical theater kid, performing in community theater and summer stock productions of such shows as “The Wiz,” “Purlie” and “Mame.”

So he thought it was a shame that Artscape, which describes itself as one of the nation’s largest free outdoor arts festivals, passed over one of the most popular performing arts genres — live theater. That changes Saturday when the festival debuts its Baltimore Onstage programming.

“Artscape is a buffet of art that inspires so many people,” Gilmore said. “To not have had theater there takes away a choice. By adding it, we make sure everybody gets to eat.”

Though Artscape has occasionally featured theatrical performances during its four-decade history, this is the first year, Gilmore said, that “we are integrating theater into all the stages. Theater will show up across the festival footprint in a very intentional way.”
