SUN: Baltimore Streetcar Museum plans $28M renovation

As the Baltimore Streetcar Museum celebrates its 60th anniversary, it is preparing to launch a $28 million capital campaign to renovate its city campus — an effort that potentially could proceed more swiftly now that two buildings have been placed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Museum officials were notified earlier this month that the freight house at 2201 Falls Road and a former Maryland and Pennsylvania Railroad roundhouse at 2601 Falls Road have made the federal government’s list of historically significant sites designated as worthy of conservation and preservation.

The roundhouse is owned by the City of Baltimore, but the museum is in the process of negotiating a long-term lease to take over the property, said executive director Matthew Nawn.

“Getting national landmark status should open all kinds of financial doors to us,” Nawn told The Baltimore Sun. “It brings a significance to our museum. It says that we are more than just a few old buildings.”
