BALTIMORE — As Baltimore leaders continue debating how to respond to youth crime, a group of local teenagers on Friday said one perspective has largely been missing from the conversation: theirs.
The teens, who spent five weeks studying Maryland’s juvenile justice system before writing and performing an original production about incarceration, trauma and resilience, said adults should listen to young people before changing laws or deciding how children are punished.
“They shouldn’t be the [only] ones making all the decisions for children because they don’t know what it’s like to grow up in this generation,” teenager Zy’Ana Brown said before taking the stage.
The performance, “What They Don’t See: Youth Incarceration, Resilience, Resistance and Restoration,” was presented by WombWork Productions in partnership with the University of Maryland, Baltimore Office of Community and Civic Engagement. Blending theater, spoken word and music, the production concluded a five-week YouthWorks summer employment program.
