SUN: BGE seeks rate increase adding $8 on average to monthly electric bills

BGE residential customers would pay $8 more on average each month under a proposal to boost electric distribution rates starting early next year.

The utility filed a plan with state regulators Thursday, calling it a “bare-bones” strategy to keep bills affordable by investing only in essential maintenance and immediate risks to the electric system serving 1.3 million people.

But delaying maintenance for too long will lead to more outages, longer restoration times, more emergency repairs and higher costs for customers in the future, BGE’s president and CEO said Thursday.

“I would call this our bare-bones maintenance rate case,” Tamla Olivier said in an interview Thursday with The Baltimore Sun. “We recognize customers are dealing with significant financial pressures, and so the rate case we are filing is specifically focused on maintaining the system.
