For the planned redevelopment of the Inner Harbor, Baltimore City Council will consider closing the traffic spur that connects northbound traffic on Light Street with Calvert Street, with the change potentially being made permanently down the line.
The legislation will be introduced in early fall, a spokesperson for the mayor’s office said.
“Permanent removal of the Spur was included in the streetscape proposal that was publicly shared in 2023. However, there are several steps that will be required to take place well before that happens,” spokesperson Silas Woods said in a statement.
The closure is part of a proposed $900 million redevelopment plan by MCB Real Estate that will replace the current pavilions with 900 new housing units, office space, retail space and parks. The project has been promoted as a way to revive downtown Baltimore, though some residents and advocates have raised questions about its potential impact. City Councilmembers Mark Conway and Ryan Dorsey, who have previously been critical of the project, did not respond to questions about the proposed street closure by publication deadline.
