SUN: Kalshi, Polymarket users trade $1.1M on Maryland elections, despite betting ban

More than $1.1 million in Maryland election trades has been recorded on prediction market platforms Kalshi and Polymarket, according to a Baltimore Sun analysis, even as the state’s top election official warns that such trading could violate the state’s election-betting ban.

In July, State Elections Administrator Jared DeMarinis asked the Office of the State Prosecutor to investigate whether prediction-market contracts violate Maryland election law. With Election Day now two days away, the office would not say whether it had taken any action.

Event contracts are yes or no wagers, bought for less than $1 each, on whether something will happen, such as a candidate winning an election. Each winning contract pays $1 before fees; losing contracts pay nothing.

The $1.1 million figure, based on publicly available trading data analyzed by The Baltimore Sun, covers Kalshi and Polymarket’s international platform. It excludes smaller platforms and Polymarket’s separate U.S. platform, which does not publish comparable trading volumes.
