SUN | ‘Living testimony’: North Harford valedictorian’s faith-filled speech strikes chord

Kendall Chandler knew she wanted to talk about her faith during her North Harford High School valedictorian speech, but she wasn’t sure how explicitly Christian she should be.

“My mom was really worried about it,” the 18-year-old said, and some teachers she shared her idea with noted that they weren’t sure how her message would go over.

But when Chandler delivered her May 29 speech to her fellow public school graduates and included references to Jesus and her Christian faith, it drew widespread praise online and got an emotional response from North Harford graduation attendees, including Harford Schools interim Superintendent Dyann Mack and County Executive Bob Cassilly, who sat behind her.

“Our value is not in these medals, it is not in these chords. It is not in our titles How do I know that? Because I am the living testimony of a living, loving God who loves us all so very much,” Chandler told the crowd, sparking applause.
