SUN: Maryland to collect tolls using trailer plates when car plates go unread

Starting Jan. 1, a new state law will allow the Maryland Transportation Authority to collect tolls using trailer license plates when cameras cannot capture the license plate of the towing vehicle.

The change applies to trailers and semitrailers, known as Class G vehicles, and is intended to help the agency collect unpaid tolls. Officials said the law does not create a new toll or allow motorists to be charged twice for the same trip.

Previously, the MDTA was not authorized to use images of trailer license plates to assess tolls because trailers are not motorized or self-propelled vehicles.

The law, passed during the 2026 General Assembly session, allows the agency to bill the registered owner of a trailer or semitrailer only when it cannot capture an image of the towing vehicle’s front or rear license plate.
