OCEAN CITY, MD. (WBFF) — Arrests more than doubled during Ocean City’s Endless Summer Cruisin this month, while traffic stops during September’s Bike Week reached a five-year high, according to police, who attributed the increases to expanded staffing, proactive enforcement and new technology.
Both events also saw fatal crashes, though enforcement statistics painted a mixed picture. Preliminary Cruisin figures showed more arrests and citations, while final Bike Week data showed declines in citations, DUIs, and drug- and weapons-related arrests compared with last year.
“Enforcement is up due to proactive enforcement in general, our staffing numbers are also higher than in previous years, and new technology like the Axon license plate readers that are installed in some of our newer vehicles,” police Deputy Communications Manager Ashley Miller said in an email.
During Endless Summer Cruisin, a driver died after a southbound vehicle struck the median and overturned near 15th Street and Baltimore Avenue around 1:27 a.m. Oct. 10, Miller said. The driver was ejected and pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger suffered injuries that were not life-threatening. The investigation remains ongoing.
