BALTIMORE — The Orioles apologized to fans on Monday and offered complimentary tickets after a miscommunication about Zay Flowers Jersey Night at Camden Yards on Saturday.
The star Ravens wide receiver was originally promoted by the ballclub to serve as the guest splasher in the Bird Bath Splash Zone during the second inning of Saturday’s game against the Boston Red Sox. Fans who said they paid for expensive tickets in those sections showed up expecting to see Flowers spray fans with water, but they instead got the Oriole Bird and Poe, one of the Ravens’ mascots.
After the game, an Orioles spokesperson said Flowers was not on the docket to be the guest splasher. Flowers was originally announced as such in June, but the spokesperson said “plans changed for the evening” shortly after. The team did not make fans aware of the change, though it did stop promoting the night as anything more than Flowers throwing out the first pitch and a jersey giveaway.
Fans in the Bird Bath, including a family of 11 who said they spent over $800 on tickets, were frustrated by the club’s lack of communication.
