Teens charged in deadly east Baltimore crash, grandma demands justice for Eric Browner Jr.

Three teenagers have been charged in connection with an armed carjacking and a deadly crash that killed 24-year-old Eric Browner Jr. in east Baltimore, as detectives continue searching for a fourth suspect.

Balloons now mark the spot at Harford Road and Homestead Street in northeast Baltimore where police said Browner was killed in a hit-and-run crash on Oct. 23. Police said the crash happened just before 11 p.m., after a stolen vehicle, taken during an armed carjacking, slammed into Browner.

Baltimore police previously released images of three individuals and asked the public for help identifying them, offering a $6,000 reward.

Police said a 15-year-old boy who was driving the stolen vehicle faces multiple charges, including manslaughter, robbery and hit-and-run. A 15-year-old girl who was a passenger has been charged with motor vehicle theft, police said. Another passenger, a 14-year-old boy, has been charged with armed carjacking. Detectives said they are still looking for a fourth suspect who was also in the car.

At Browner’s home, where he lived with his grandmother, Brenda Browner described the impact of the loss and her reaction to the arrests.

“Yes, and I’m glad (there’ve been arrests). That’s a little relief off my heart,” she said. “And I hope they are accountable for what they did to my grandson. They don’t deserve to be on the streets,” she added.

The case comes amid ongoing concerns about juvenile crime in Baltimore, including a September crash involving a 12-year-old accused of causing the death of a 69-year-old motorcyclist while driving a stolen vehicle. Under Maryland law, the 12-year-old cannot face criminal charges in that case because of restrictions on prosecuting children under 13.

Brenda Browner said she wants those accused in her grandson’s death held responsible.

“They should do something about it. They shouldn’t, they shouldn’t let them get away with it. Because they do it once they’re going to do it again. And it’s like they have no remorse and they just keep on doing the same old stuff,” she said.

“I don’t have no pity for them, I don’t feel sorry for them they did it and they had to pay for it. Simple as that,” she added.

Police said the two boys remain detained at the Department of Juvenile Services, while the girl is on house arrest.
