Three runners arrived at MedStar Health’s South Baltimore physical therapy clinic April 15, refueling with soda and orange slices after running over two marathons. But they quickly put their shoes back on for research before heading back on their 200-mile journey.

Chris Heydrick, Chris Wilde and Michael Wardian strapped 18 markers to various points of their legs and hips, then hopped on a treadmill for even more steps while cameras tracked their movement. A few minutes later, a computer screen showed a 3D image of their lower bodies.

The runners were part of Miles Across MedStar Health, an ultra-run of about 200 miles in four days starting at MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital on April 13 and ending at MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center on April 16. Heydrick, 29, is a physical therapist, and Wilde, 54, is a physician assistant at MedStar. Wardian, 52, is an ultramarathoner and MedStar athlete.

The end goal of the run was more than the finish line: The runners set out to gain data.
