WASHINGTON (TNND) — President Donald Trump honored Hispanic Americans as champions of “faith, family, and our God-given freedoms” during a White House Hispanic Heritage Month celebration Wednesday.
“We honor the countless Hispanic American patriots throughout our history who have been among the greatest champions of faith, family, and our God-given freedoms,” Trump said.
The remarks expanded on a White House message issued earlier this month, in which Trump said Hispanic Americans have “shaped the fabric of our culture” and strengthened the country’s institutions.
Trump said Hispanic Americans have “built incredible businesses, founded great churches, pioneered new industries” and served in the military. He claimed Hispanic employment is expanding rapidly and that the number of Hispanics in technology jobs has increased by 30% over the past year.

He also said Hispanic families and small businesses have “thousands and thousands of extra dollars in their pocket,” crediting his tax legislation and its provisions eliminating federal taxes on tips, overtime and Social Security benefits.
Trump praised attendees as “hardworking people,” “smart as hell” and “energetic,” while also touting his gains with Hispanic voters. He defended his border wall, saying it was meant to keep “bad people out” and asserting Hispanic Americans want those people kept out “more than anybody.”
Secretary of State Marco Rubio also appeared at the event, saying many Hispanic Americans cherish the United States because they or their relatives know firsthand “what life is like in other countries.”
“Hispanic Americans, we are Americans,” Rubio said. “We are proud to be Americans.”
National Hispanic Heritage Month, observed from Sept. 15 through Oct. 15, recognizes the histories, cultures and contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans.
