A dramatic high-speed police chase in Wisconsin ended when a fleeing driver launched his vehicle over a roadway before crashing into a field, authorities said.

The pursuit began after state troopers conducted a traffic stop and discovered the driver had an active felony warrant. When Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office arrived to assist, the driver sped away, leading police on a chase that covered several miles across local roads and the interstate.

Authorities said the driver at one point reversed direction off an exit ramp before continuing to drive through nearby streets and parking lots.

The chase came to a violent end when the driver exited the interstate at high speed, lost control, and drove into a ditch before climbing an embankment and going airborne over a road below. Another vehicle was passing underneath at the exact moment the suspect’s car flew overhead.

The vehicle crashed into a field after landing on the other side of the roadway.

Deputies said the driver and a passenger then tried to run from the crash scene, but officers quickly caught and arrested the driver.

The suspect, a 44-year-old Dewayne Stokes of Milwaukee, suffered minor injuries and was treated before being taken to jail.

Authorities said he had already been out on bond in a separate felony case involving an alleged stolen vehicle.

He now faces multiple charges, including fleeing and eluding police, recklessly endangering safety, bail jumping, resisting officers, firearm possession by a felon, and marijuana possession.

Officials said the chase lasted roughly 4.5 miles.
