WASHINGTON (TNND) — President Donald Trump claimed Monday that Iran’s enriched uranium will either be surrendered to the U.S. or destroyed as the two countries continue working toward a potential peace deal.
“The Enriched Uranium (Nuclear Dust!) will either be immediately turned over to the United States to be brought home and destroyed or, preferably, in conjunction and coordination with the Islamic Republic of Iran, destroyed in place or, at another acceptable location, with the Atomic Energy Commission, or its equivalent, being witness to this process and event,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
His comments came after an earlier post in which he said countries negotiating for peace should join the Abraham Accords.
Over Memorial Day weekend, Trump announced that a deal with Iran — which would include reopening the Strait of Hormuz — had been “largely” negotiated. He added that final details were still being discussed.
A ceasefire reached in April was intended to allow discussions over the future of Iran’s nuclear program and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz — a critical waterway through which roughly 20% of the world’s oil and gas passes each day.
The Associated Press reported Sunday that the potential deal would involve reopening the Strait of Hormuz, ending the war and Iran giving up its uranium stockpile.
During a visit to India, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that “significant progress, although not final progress, has been made” in negotiations and that the world did not need to fear Iran obtaining a nuclear weapon.

Meanwhile, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian told state TV that Iran was ready “to assure the world that we are not after a nuclear weapon.” However, Iran’s embassy in India responded to Rubio on social media, saying Tehran has an “inalienable” right to nuclear technology.
