Wife of Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator shot in Virginia home

A 27-year-old Ashburn man has been charged after the wife of former Washington Commanders and current Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy was shot Sunday evening at the family’s Loudoun County home, according to the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies responded around 7:32 p.m. to the 20000 block of Northpark Drive for a reported shooting. When they arrived, they found a woman suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. She was taken to a nearby hospital with serious injuries.

The victim was identified as Mia Bieniemy, 57, who is reported to be in stable condition.

The sheriff’s office said Elijah Zion Bieniemy, of Ashburn, was arrested and charged with malicious wounding, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony and discharge of a firearm inside a dwelling. He was taken to the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center, where he is being held without bond.

Court records indicate an arraignment scheduled for Monday morning in Loudoun County was continued. The next scheduled court date for Elijah Bieniemy is a preliminary hearing on Aug. 31 at 10 a.m. As of late Monday morning, the public defender was listed as Bieniemy’s attorney in online court records.

Officials said there is no ongoing threat to the public. The investigation remains active.

The Chiefs released the following statement to 7News:

“The club is aware of the incident involving Eric Bieniemy’s family. Out of respect for their privacy, we won’t have a comment at this time. Our thoughts and prayers are with them.”

Eric Bieniemy was with the Kansas City Chiefs in St. Joseph, Missouri, earlier Sunday for the team’s second training camp practice. After a previous stint with the team, he was rehired as offensive coordinator for the upcoming NFL season.

Eric Bieniemy spent one season as offensive coordinator for the Washington Commanders in 2023. Under head coach Andy Reid, he led the Chiefs offense to two Super Bowl victories in the 2019-20 and 2022-23 seasons.
