Efforts renewed to identify young woman’s remains found in 1991 Maryland cold case

MARYLAND (7News) — 35 years ago, a young woman was found dead along Interstate 270 in Maryland, but she still has no name or identity, according to police.

The Maryland Missing Persons Network is renewing efforts to identify the Jane Doe and is asking the public to take another look at forensic sketches and case details in the hopes that someone might finally recognize her. Despite decades of investigation by state police, her cause of death remains unknown, and the case remains open and unsolved.

On July 31, 1991, a State Highway Administration worker trimming bushes discovered the remains of a young woman down an embankment near the Baker Hill Road overpass along southbound I270 in Frederick. Investigators believed that she had been dead for weeks before she was found and needed the help of forensic facial recognition sketches to try to identify her.

Authorities said that she was a white female between the ages of 16 and 21, with shoulder-length brown hair. She was found wearing a light-colored tank top, a blue denim skirt with a garter waistband, and pink nail polish on her toes. She was also found wearing multiple pieces of jewelry: an “Advance” digital watch, a gold-plated herringbone necklace, a pink nylon anklet, two rings: Avon silver solitaire ring and a floral pattern ring, and four bracelets: 3 silver bangle bracelets and a “Trifari” gold bracelet.

The Maryland Missing Persons Network is asking anyone with information, or anyone who may recognize the victim from the provided images, to come forward to the Maryland State Police.
