The closure at Seneca Creek State Park caused by a rabid beaver is now expanding as the Maryland Department of Natural Resources looks to test additional animals.

The Route 28 parking lot and the Greenway trail from that lot to Old Seneca Road are now closed, according to a news release. This comes after the state already closed a portion of the park near Berryville Road and about 1-mile of nearby trail.

Maryland DNR announced Monday that the beaver involved in the attack on a 10-year-old girl had tested positive for rabies. The expanded closures will allow crews to track down and test other animals that may be affected by the disease.

The girl was canoeing with a group at summer camp when she was attacked Aug. 14. The girl ended up with three bites to her leg.

NC8

This is the latest of several beaver attacks in Maryland in recent months. Two attacks happened a little over 36 miles away at Cunningham Falls State Park.

A 13-year-old swimmer was attacked by a beaver on July 26, and a 19-year-old fisherman was attacked on Aug. 5.

DNR recommends staying at least 25 yards away from beavers and never approaching or attempting to interact with them.
