WASHINGTON (TNND) — Vice President JD Vance will address reporters and take questions Thursday during the White House’s first press briefing in 42 days following Karoline Leavitt’s departure at the end of August.
Vance also took the podium twice while Leavitt was on maternity leave over the summer. Leavitt returned to work in June, but announced last month that she would leave to spend more time with her family.
No successor has been named, though several names have circulated, including CNN contributor Scott Jennings, Principal Deputy Press Secretary Anna Kelly and White House Communications Director Steven Cheung.
On her last day as press secretary, Leavitt said the most important thing is understanding that President Donald Trump is “his own best spokesperson.”
“We joke, Stephen Cheung and me, that he is the true communications director and press secretary here at the White House,” she said. “And just understanding that, knowing that, and believing in the mission.”

Trump said in August that Leavitt had made the job “very glamorous,” prompting an unusually large number of applicants.
“I’ve never had so many job applications in my life,” Trump told reporters before boarding Air Force One for a trip to South Carolina, where he was set to attend a campaign rally for Sen. Darline Graham. “She’s made that job very glamorous.”
