SUN | Ocean City Labor Day weekend: Events, traffic and beach tips

OCEAN CITY, MD. (WBFF) — Ocean City expects larger crowds, reduced lifeguard staffing and heavier traffic this Labor Day weekend as the resort approaches the traditional close of the summer season.

Lifeguard staffing has declined sharply as seasonal employees return to college. Ocean City Beach Patrol Capt. Butch Arbin said only 16 stands were operating earlier this week, compared with 90 during peak season.

More stands will be added for the holiday weekend as guards return. Ocean City is offering a $140 incentive for guards driving from the Bay Bridge or farther, while guards already in town can work overtime, Arbin said.

The Beach Patrol urges visitors to swim near an occupied stand and ask guards about water conditions. Rip currents can develop on calm, sunny days and change rapidly, according to the National Weather Service.
