BALTIMORE (WBFF) — Baltimore City leaders delivered remarks on Tuesday that warned of this year’s increase in sleep-related infant deaths, and encouraged residents to use infant safe sleep practices, said city officials.
During the press conference, the Baltimore City B’more for Healthy Babies (BHB) initiative was highlighted as a resource for parents and families looking for support.
The Baltimore City Health Department (BCHD) has reported a concerning increase in sleep-related infant deaths this year.
In 2025, there were 11 fatalities reported for that year, and in 2026, the same number has already been recorded with several months remaining.
About 74% of these cases involved co-sleeping, where a parent or guardian shares a bed with their infant.
“Sleep-related deaths are the leading cause of death for babies between one month and one year. The loss of any child is a tragedy, especially when the death is preventable,” said Health Commissioner Dr. Michelle Taylor.
Mayor Scott and Dr. Taylor participated in a demonstration of safe infant sleep practices using the “ABCDs” of safe sleep, emphasizing infants should sleep alone, on their backs, in a crib, and don’t smoke near your infant to protect their health.
If a family is in need of a crib, they can call 410-649-0500.
“It takes all of us working together: aunts and uncles, grandparents, siblings, cousins, neighbors, and friends. I encourage everybody to get informed about the ABCDs of safe sleep, share information with those around you, and take advantage of the resources we have available, including through B’more for Healthy Babies,” said Mayor Scott.
