MARYLAND (WBFF) — Federal attorneys in Maryland have filed a charge against Karthikeyan Deenadayalan, the chief engineer of the M/V Dali, alleging he failed to immediately notify the U.S. Coast Guard that a hazardous condition existed aboard the vessel.
The allegation stems from the events leading up to the Dali’s collision with the Francis Scott Key Bridge, which killed six construction workers.

Court documents show federal attorneys and Deenadayalan have reached a Deferred Prosecution Agreement.
Under the agreement, the charge could be dismissed if Deenadayalan complies with certain terms.

Prosecutors say the alleged failure to notify the Coast Guard violated the Ports and Waterways Safety Act, which was passed in 1972.
