BALTIMORE (WBFF) — With Maryland’s Republican gubernatorial primary approaching, candidate Ed Hale accused Gov. Wes Moore and the Maryland Democratic Party of trying to influence who Republicans nominate to challenge Moore in November.
Speaking at a June 17 press conference alongside Republican lawmakers, Hale claimed Moore and state Democrats are attempting to “handpick their own Republican opponent.”
Hale said he is building a team ready to address what he called years of state government “neglect” and sharply criticized Moore’s record in office.
“He’s a very adept speaker,” Hale said of Moore. “But in terms of delivery, he’s really not good at getting anything done.”
Hale also alleged Moore is focused on raising campaign money and positioning himself for higher office rather than governing Maryland.
The Republican candidate argued that tax and fee increases under Moore, including what he called the “tech tax,” are driving businesses and residents out of the state. He said he regularly hears from Marylanders who can no longer afford to live there.
Hale further claimed Moore is trying to shape the Republican primary by supporting former GOP nominee Dan Cox, whom Hale described as a weaker general-election opponent.
Looking ahead, Hale said he would prioritize economic development, job creation and streamlining the state’s permitting process. He also criticized Baltimore city leaders’ claims that the city is business-friendly.

Despite his criticism of state leadership, Hale said Maryland has strong assets. “Our state’s fantastic, great people, the environment, the of the geography,” he said. “We have mountains, the ocean, bay in between. We have so many good things here, but it’s all been neglected.”
