Two men have been sentenced to decades in federal prison for a deadly attempted carjacking in Baltimore.

This week, the U.S. District Attorney for Maryland announced Jerritt Barron, 24, was sentenced to 40 years in prison, followed by five years of supervised release, and Jeremy Matheny, 27, was sentenced to 24 years in prison, followed by five years of supervised release, for an attempted carjacking that resulted in death.

Back in June 2022, investigators said Barron and Matheny fatally shot Sai Charan Nakka in an attempted carjacking at I-95 near the Caton Avenue exit.

Law enforcement expert Jason Johnson weighed in on the sentences, and overall prosecution of the defendants in federal court.

Investigators had linked the pair to four armed carjackings and two attempted armed carjackings, including the attempt that resulted in Nakka’s death.

In 2023, the U.S. Attorney for the District of Maryland opted to charge Barron and Matheny federally in a 14-count indictment.

Johnson believes this was a move state and federal prosecutors should make more often when it comes to tackling the issue of repeat offenders committing carjacking sprees.

Specifically, because federal court often comes with stiffer penalties and more mandatory sentences.

“The bottom line is that in order to really address persistent people who are career criminals and who will continue to violate the law and really are unafraid of the state court system when it comes to sentencing, the federal system is the place for their case to go,” Johnson told FOX45 News. “A first or even second or even third offense for carjacking, you’re not going to see that. You’re not going to see incarceration of 20, 30 or 40 years in the state system, no matter what the maximum sentence is.”

Court records show Barron was also convicted in state court in connection to the carjacking spree and back in 2024 was sentenced to 35 years in prison.
