Louis Vuitton sues Maryland Live! Casino, alleges luxury bag giveaway copied iconic brand

High-end fashion company Louis Vuitton has filed a lawsuit against Maryland Live! Casino and its parent companies, alleging the casino’s recent promotional giveaways illegally copied the brand’s famous monogram design and misled customers into believing the companies were affiliated.

The lawsuit, filed June 2026 in U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland, accuses Live! Casino & Hotel and The Cordish Companies of trademark counterfeiting, trademark infringement, false association, trademark dilution and unfair competition.

According to the complaint, Live! Casino launched a monthlong promotion in April 2026 called “The Art of Luxury,” offering customers a collection of handbags, backpacks, tote bags and toiletry cases featuring a pattern that Louis Vuitton claims closely resembled its iconic monogram design.

The lawsuit alleges the bags used Louis Vuitton’s signature floral symbols while replacing the luxury brand’s famous “LV” logo with the word “Live!” to create what the company describes as a false association between the two brands.

Defendants intentionally manufactured, advertised, promoted, offered, and distributed a ‘luxury bag collection’ featuring copies of Louis Vuitton’s iconic Monogram Design trademark,” attorneys for Louis Vuitton wrote in the complaint.

The company claims customers could obtain the bags through promotional events or by redeeming casino rewards credits earned through gambling, dining and shopping.

Louis Vuitton alleges customers were never informed the giveaway bags were not genuine Louis Vuitton products and were not told the casino had no affiliation with the fashion house.

According to court filings, Louis Vuitton sent a cease-and-desist letter to the casino in April 2026, objecting to the promotion and demanding it stop using the company’s intellectual property.

The complaint says Live! Casino later indicated it would stop distributing the bags, but Louis Vuitton alleges the casino then launched a second promotion called “Endless Elegance” weeks later.

That May promotion offered customers a chance to win what the lawsuit describes as authentic Louis Vuitton merchandise, including handbags, jewelry, sunglasses, hats, belts, wallets and fragrances.

Louis Vuitton argues the promotion continued to reinforce the mistaken impression that the casino had a relationship with the luxury brand.

Louis Vuitton is seeking an injunction to prevent further use of its trademarks, destruction of the promotional products, corrective advertising and monetary damages.

The company is also asking the court to award profits, damages and attorneys’ fees, and is seeking up to $2 million per counterfeit mark per type of goods under federal trademark law.
