A Baltimore man with previous murder convictions was sentenced to federal prison after illegally possessing a firearm and firing at a vehicle during a shootout in east Baltimore, officials stated.

James Beverly, Jr., 40, was sentenced to 54 months in prison followed by three years of supervised release.

In February 2024, officials reported that Beverly planned to distribute drugs, specifically fentanyl and cocaine base, which were packaged for distribution.

Beverly was also in possession of a loaded semi-automatic pistol.

Authorities noted that Beverly was prohibited from possessing a firearm due to prior felony convictions, which include first-degree murder and second-degree murder.

While Beverly was standing on a street corner in east Baltimore, officials said an SUV pulled up alongside him, and the passenger opened fire, shooting approximately 10 rounds at Beverly.

Beverly fell to the ground and remained there as the gunman fired more shots.

After the vehicle began to drive away, Beverly then drew his gun and started shooting in the vehicle’s direction.

Surveillance video showed Beverly shooting his firearm 11 times at the vehicle when officials said he was no longer under attack.

Baltimore police responded to the scene and arrested Beverly, who was found with narcotics and cash, and officers also located the firearm he had used.
