Following the results of Tuesday’s primary elections, the Maryland Democratic Party issued an immediate response to the news that Dan Cox secured the Republican nomination for governor, setting up a general election rematch against incumbent Governor Wes Moore.
In a press release distributed on June 23, 2026, titled “Maryland Republicans Nominate Dan Cox To Lose Again”, state Democrats highlighted their previous success in the 2022 gubernatorial race, where Moore defeated Cox by over 32 percentage points.
The official Democratic press release detailed three primary focal points that the party intends to use as central pillars of their general election campaign:
Abortion and Reproductive Rights: The release highlighted Cox’s stance that abortion should not be permitted and referenced his legislative record as a former state delegate, during which he introduced 14 bills related to abortion restrictions.
The 2020 Election and January 6th: Democrats pointed to Cox’s past actions surrounding the 2020 election cycle, noting his organization of buses for protesters to attend the rally in Washington D.C. on January 6th and his past public criticisms of former Vice President Mike Pence.
Firearms Policy: The document questioned Cox’s support for permitless concealed carry legislation and noted the background of his chosen running mate.
The Context for the 2026 Rematch
While Democrats are relying on the electoral math of 2022 to carry their message forward, Cox’s 2026 campaign is focusing heavily on economic and state oversight issues. In his victory speech on Tuesday night, Cox countered the current administration’s record, arguing that the incumbent governor’s policies have been harmful to Marylanders by increasing taxes, fees, and energy bills. Cox stated that his campaign will focus on affordability, tax relief, and increasing energy generation within the state.
With the primary concluded, voters will face a clear ideological choice in November as both major parties prepare to re-litigate the platforms that defined the state’s previous gubernatorial cycle.
