COCKEYSVILLE, MD — Concerns over safety are growing in a Baltimore County neighborhood after police say an armed homeowner killed one man and injured two others during a deadly confrontation in his driveway.
Baltimore County Police say three masked men, one carrying a handgun, approached a homeowner sitting outside on Greenside Drive around 10:40 p.m. Saturday. Investigators say the homeowner, who was also armed, fired at the men after claiming he was threatened.
Neighbors described the chaos that unfolded on Halloween night in a typically quiet community. “That’s terrible. I never would have seen something like happen that close here, though,” LeRoy Randolph.
According to Baltimore County police, the three men ran away after the gunfire. Officers later found 20-year-old Amon Walker dead nearby, while the other two, both adults, were found at local hospitals where they sought treatment for their injuries.
Some residents described feeling unsettled by the violence and questioned how safe they are even outside their own homes.
“You have to start guarding yourself and taking sometimes matters in your own hands because you have to protect yourself no matter what,” Gerri Chambers said.
Another person reflected on how times have changed. “I mean, when I was in my 20s and 30s, we’d go out to all these places and clubs and have a good time on weekends and dance and have great time. We didn’t have any concerns about something like this happening. But today people are afraid to go out because of just what happened and all. They’re afraid to have fun,” Doug Cragg said.
Baltimore County police said there is no active threat to the community, but some people remain shaken. Investigators said they recovered a loaded handgun believed to have belonged to the suspects. The department’s homicide unit is continuing to investigate the circumstances leading up to the shooting.
