Officer opens fire after reported active shooter call at Fort Washington Park

FORT WASHINGTON, Md. (7News) — A Maryland-National Capital Park Police officer opened fire Friday evening after a man displayed a handgun while officers responded to a report of an active shooter at Fort Washington Park, authorities said.

According to the Maryland-National Capital Park Police, Prince George’s County Division, the incident occurred at about 6:16 p.m. on July 31.

Police said an officer responded to Fort Washington Park after receiving a report of an active shooter. Once on the scene, “an individual produced a handgun,” prompting the officer to discharge their firearm, according to the department.

Authorities did not immediately release information about whether anyone was struck by gunfire, whether any injuries were reported, whether anyone was taken into custody or the gender of anybody involved.

The U.S. Park Police is leading the investigation into the incident but has not yet released a statement.
