The first day of school will be almost a week later in the 2027-2028 academic year. The Anne Arundel County Board of Education unanimously approved the academic calendar during a meeting Wednesday afternoon.

Under the new calendar, school will start Monday, Aug. 30, 2027, and end Wednesday, June 14, 2028, depending on the number of inclement weather days used.

Bob Mosier, chief communications director and organizer of the Anne Arundel County Public Schools Calendar Committee, said at the April 22 meeting that the late start to the school year is partly because two of the three holidays for which schools normally close, such as Rosh Hashana and Eid al-Fitr, fall on weekends.

Students will have a five-day Thanksgiving break, a six-day winter break and a six-day spring break. The only early dismissal days will be the quarterly unity days, when students are encouraged to wear orange to show their commitment to ending bullying.
