Sewer overflow in Bel Air released 750,000 gallons of sewage

A sewer overflowed in Bel Air on Wednesday, releasing an estimated 750,000 gallons of raw sewage, according to the Harford County Health Department.

On July 29, at approximately 2:50 p.m., the Harford County Health Department was notified of a Sanitary Sewer Overflow (SSO) affecting Bynum Run in the area of Sunny View Road.

The overflow was resolved by the county’s Department of Public Works on Thursday at around 2:30 a.m., cleanup efforts are underway and signage has been posted in the area.

Officials are advising people to avoid physical contact with the water in the tributary flowing into Bynum Run, 800 feet upstream from E. Ring Factory Road, and all locations downstream within Bynum Run for the next week.

“Any contact with natural bodies of water contains some element of risk. The risk changes depending on water flow, weather conditions, and other environmental factors,” said Harford County Health Department officials.
