Site plans give new glimpse at proposed Sphere venue in National Harbor

A proposed Sphere set to be built in the National Harbor in Maryland will likely tower over the MGM Hotel, according to a site plan obtained by 7News.

Site plan documents obtained Thursday showed how the new entertainment venue would be laid out once the roughly $1 billion construction project begins. Those plans, however, had not yet been submitted to Prince George’s County for review, according to the Washington Business Journal.

Sitting at roughly 300 feet tall, the mini Sphere would hold 6,000 guests for concerts and have an overall smaller footprint than its predecessor in Las Vegas, which seats over 18,000.

Plans recommend several plazas surrounding the Sphere, with VIP and General Admission entrances facing the MGM. An elevated path would also be built to connect the two venues.

Opposite of an already existing northbound ramp to Interstate 295 will be a rideshare drop-off area, some parking, and a pedestrian plaza with a pedestrian bridge over the ramp.

Behind the building would be a service yard and loading docks.

Earlier this year, Prince George’s County leaders touted the proposal as a win for the county as it continues to try to bounce back from the now-shuttered Six Flags America and the upcoming departure of the Washington Commanders from Northwest Stadium.

An economic study released in February found the proposed sphere would bring in $1.3 billion for the county and $200 million elsewhere in Maryland.
