BALTIMORE (WBFF) — More than a month after federal immigration agents arrested two people outside a Baltimore elementary school, the Baltimore City Council will hold a hearing to examine how stepped-up immigration enforcement is affecting the community.
The hearing, scheduled for Thursday at 12:30 p.m. at Baltimore City Hall, comes after the June 11 arrests outside Commodore John Rodgers Elementary/Middle School sparked widespread criticism from city officials and renewed concerns about immigration enforcement near schools.
Representatives from Baltimore City Public Schools, the Baltimore City Health Department, the Mayor’s Office of Children and Family Success and the Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs are expected to discuss how increased U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) activity has affected students and families.
Councilman Mark Conway said the hearing is intended to examine what he described as the broader impact of ICE operations across the city.
