SUN: Hampden has a new Blockbuster

BALTIMORE (WBFF) — VHS tapes, DVDs and the bright blue branding of a ticket stub. For years, for millions of people, these were the makings of home movie night — a production in itself, requiring travel, plastic and something known as human interaction.

But while the Blockbuster video store has long gone the way of the dodo, it’s making a small comeback in Baltimore — kind of.

The rust-colored Hampden Blockbuster joins a growing list of nontraditional “little free libraries” in the North Baltimore neighborhood, self-serve kiosks offering trinkets, pet food, mugs and greeting cards.

Perched in front of a rowhouse on the 3100 block of Chestnut Avenue, freelance animator Jake Armstrong made the two-shelf box from leftover lumber. He said he was inspired by other “Free Blockbusters” online.
