SUN: Hanover man gives birds a new place to nest, donates 50 handmade houses to Hashawha

At 87, Lawrence Bouchat may be retired, but he hasn’t stopped working with his hands.

After a career in plumbing and maintenance and as a machinist, he has turned toward a different kind of project: building birdhouses.

On Thursday, Bouchat, who lives in Hanover in Howard County, donated about 50 of his handmade birdhouses to the Hashawha Environmental Center in Carroll County. The boxes will replace older ones that are broken or no longer usable by birds, Carroll County Department of Recreation and Parks Director Bob Hicks said.

“He just has a passion for being in nature, and he wants to help nature, and he wants everyone also to appreciate it,” said Bouchat’s daughter, Ann Bouchat, of Woodbine. “That’s his driving force. A day spent sitting outside in nature is a good day.”
