MARYLAND (WBFF) — Heading to the beach this weekend and worried about jellyfish, biting flies or water quality? Two online resources can help: a Lower Shore fishing club’s Facebook advisories and the Maryland Department of the Environment’s Healthy Beaches website.
The Air Down Surf Fishing Club combines government weather and marine data with firsthand reports to assess jellyfish and biting-fly conditions along Delmarva. Founded by surf anglers Raymond Gendron and Kim Stone, the club posts its assessments daily on Facebook. For a more science-based approach, Healthy Beaches uses water samples collected with local health departments to post conditions at more than 150 public swimming areas.
The club’s Thursday advisory placed the regional jellyfish threat at “moderate,” meaning stinging sea nettles were present and heavier pockets were possible. Another post rated the biting-fly threat as high Thursday morning, with improvement expected by afternoon.
Gendron stressed that the posts are regional assessments, not guarantees for individual beaches.
