Baltimore native Sabrina Tapp-Harper has won the race against incumbent Sam Cogen to be the next Baltimore City Sheriff on Tuesday during the Maryland primaries.

Running as the first-ever woman Sheriff of Baltimore City, Tapp-Harper plans to focus on improved public safety through experienced leadership, accountability, and professional service to residents. In her campaign announcement she mentioned “Baltimore deserves a Sheriff’s Office that is professional, responsive, and accountable,”

According to her campaign, Tapp-Harper says Baltimore needs a sheriff who understands its neighborhoods and challenges.

“Baltimore deserves a Sheriff who understands our neighborhoods, our challenges, and our hopes. I’ve dedicated my career to fighting crime, protecting families from domestic violence, and standing up against gun violence. Now, I’m ready to bring that experience to the Sheriff’s Office – to make Baltimore safer and stronger for every resident.”

Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott endorsed Tapp-Harper earlier this month, appearing in a campaign video.

“Sabrina has always had Baltimore’s back. Now we need to have Sabrina’s,” Scott wrote in a fundraising email for Tapp-Harper’s campaign sent after the video was posted.

She was also endorsed by the Baltimore City Council Vice President Sharon Green Middleton.

Tapp-Harper served the city for 40+ years and is a retired Major from the Baltimore City Police Department, and retired assistant sheriff for the Baltimore City Sheriff’s Office.

She is a gun violence prevention advocate who’s testified before congress and an advocate of the Violence Against Women Act, which led to an invitation to the White House under President Obama.

Now, she’s set to become the 42nd Sheriff of Baltimore City.
