MARYLAND (WBFF) — A federal judge on Wednesday ruled that attorneys suing the Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services over claims that the Central Booking and Intake Center routinely detained people after their release had been ordered can proceed as a class action lawsuit on behalf of more than 13,000 people.
The lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court in Baltimore covers a three-year period between 2019 and 2022.
Central Booking, as it is commonly known, is a state facility run by the DPSCS. The Maryland Attorney General’s office is representing the agency. Neither DPSCS nor the OAG immediately responded to requests for comment.
“It’s a total victory,” said Cary J. Hansel, a Baltimore attorney representing four original plaintiffs who will now pursue legal claims on behalf of a large group of people who say they have suffered similar injuries.
