5 beers, 94 mph: Drunk driver sentenced for crash that killed 71-year-old Maryland woman

An underage drunk driver, who was speeding at 94 mph when he slammed into another car and killed an 71-year-old woman in Montgomery County, will spend five years in prison.

Brody Richardson, 20, of Boyds, was sentenced Oct. 30, for the July 2025 crash that killed Mary Elizabeth Moody. Moody was a beloved sister, aunt and teacher in Maryland who spent more than 40 years in the classroom, according to her obituary.

Richardson was driving with a blood alcohol concentration of .20, more than twice the legal limit, when he struck Moody’s SUV on Great Seneca Highway, according to the Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s Office.

Prosecutors said Richardson admitted to drinking alcohol and using marijuana before getting behind the wheel.

Surveillance video and a receipt from Travilah Beer & Wine in Rockville revealed that Richardson had consumed five beers at the store between 6:57 p.m. and 10:17 p.m. — just 13 minutes before the deadly crash.
